The lotus flower can be found all over Thailand: in ponds, on top of pillars in temples, in the hands of monks during ordination ceremonies and as magical tattoos. The lotus is associated with the Lord Buddha and , fort hat reason, he is often depicted standing on an open lotus flower. The nuts can be boiled until soft , peeled and then eaten in any number of dishes. The petals can also be eaten, either raw or cooked, and dipped into a spicy Thai sauce called nam prik . The flower are also used as decoration, or as a religious offering, and the leaves can be used to wrap cigarettes or take –away snacks. Another used of the lotus flower is in herbal medicine In china, the seeds are used in the treatment of cholera; pounded lotus petals are a remedy for diarrshoea in Java, Thailand and the Philippines, and the flower is used to reduce fever in India and Cambodia.
