Telling the time

เวลานัดหมายกันสิ่งสำคัญคือความ
ตรงต่อเวลา (Being Punctual) คุณป้าเจ้าของบ้านผู้ใจดีมักจะคอยแซวฉันเสมอเวลาที่ตาลีตาเหลือกเดินออกจากบ้านแต่เช้ามืดเพราะกลัวไปไม่ทันนัด

"Tessie. If someone says 'Let's meet at half past nine, it's half past nine.' Nobody will be waiting for you before 9.00." คุณป้าว่า

คือว่าเราเป็นคนที่น้อยครั้งจะไปสายเวลามีนัด จะไปรอก่อนอย่างน้อยครึ่งชั่วโมง (ใครนัดกับเรามักจะเครียด...มันจะรีบมาทำไม...)

มาบอกเวลากันเหอะ
มีวิธีอ่านหลักๆ สองแบบดังนี้นะคะ

8.05   eight O five         /      five past eight

8.10   eight ten             /       ten past eight

8.15   eight fifteen        /       a quarter past eight

8.30   eight thirty          /       half past eight

8.45   eight forty five    /      a quarter to nine

8.50    eight fifty           /       ten to nine

9.00    nine o'clock

สงสัยว่า quarter คืออะไร คือ 1/4 ของชั่วโมงหรือ 15 นาทีนั่นเอง

o'clock   ใช้กับเวลา  .00 นาที
คือเวลาตรง  10.00 / 6.00

ดังนั้น เราจะไม่พูดว่า  
"Wake me up at ten past seven o'clock"

เราลืมเอานาฬิกาไป ถามเวลาคนข้างๆ
"Excuse me. Have you got the time?"  
นี่ไม่ได้ถามว่า มีนาฬิกามั้ย นะคะ ถามว่า กี่โมงแล้ว

สุภาพหน่อย ก็ว่า  "Could you tell me the time?"

โดยทั่วไปแล้ว มักจะใช้ twelve hour clock ในการพูดทั่วไป จะใช้ twenty four hour clock ในกรณีเป็นทางการหน่อย หรือตารางเดินรถ

 The next train from platform 2 is the twenty two fifteen departure for Chiangmai.

บางทีเราก็ใช้ am pm กำกับก็ได้เพื่อความแน่นอนของข้อมูล

What time does it leave?

9.00 = nine o'clock in the morning / 
          9  am (ไนน์ เอ เอ็ม)

5.20 (17.20) = five twenty in the afternoon / seventeen fifty
