Hi
I have been challenged hard over the last couple of months to show a living, working example of a knowledge asset that is publicly available. I know that we may not all have the same model of knowledge asset in mind, but mine is as in Learning to Fly comprising personal stories of experience, gathered by general principles and including resources which will aid application of the principles.
I usually use BBC website but that doesn't work for some.
What is out there that would illustrate where we are going with knowledge assets?
Geoff

Dear Geoff,
Not really sure if this is an answer to you question, but perhaps http://compart.pbwiki.com is something near of what you are looking for?
kind regards

So would the BBC’s recipe section be more like a knowledge asset for cooking? It links ingredients, recipes and chefs.

If, by knowledge asset, you mean a compilation of know-how, packaged
in such a way as to provide valuable reference material that others
can translate into tacit knowledge, then I would suggest the
following as an example.
Delia Smith - "the complete cookery course"

Almost everyone I know has a copy of this in their home, usually
extremely well-thumbed. You may think this is a trivial example, but
it's amazingly successful at transferring knowledge of "how to cook"
to generations of budding chefs
If only we could help organisations to package their knowledge in
such a helpful, accessible, easy to follow way!

An excellent example Nick!
Especially since the medium takes the focus away from the IT tools that
so often cloud perceptions and opinions in the KM sphere.
Thanks.

I take a different view on the Delia Smith example.
For, an effective knowledge asset needs to retain a connection to the person
behind the story. That might be a phone number, an email link, a connection
to a profile page - some way that I can engage in a conversation and ask
further questions of them, or perhaps of a broader group of practitioners.
In my view, a knowledge asset needs to be able evolve, and to be socially
constructed, to support discussion and improvement feedback.
So for me, Delia has compiled an excellent recipe book (it's on my shelf
too!), full of useful *information*, but it stops short of being a knowledge
asset because it has content, but lacks connections.
If, in her next edition, Delia wants to include her phone number and email,
and connect me to a community of fellow-readers where together we can build
on her ideas and learn from their experience too - *then* she will have
created a knowledge asset.
And, just to put your mind at rest Dave, she doesn't even need to be a Web
2.0 technofetishist to do so!

I think this is right, Chris.
I was also reminded of a comment of Dave Snowden's:
"There is a huge difference between a chef and a user of recipe books. The recipe book user (for which read the manufacturing model of consultancy) uses best practice to assemble the same ingredients in the same context to produce the same meal, time and time again. If they come into your kitchen, it will have to be re-engineered to confirm with the requirements of the recipe before they start to work (and you will pay in many ways for that). The Chef in contrast can work with whatever ingredients and utensils you happen to have to hand and create a great meal."

The conversation and engagement you refer to can enable people to move beyond recipe-book usage to chef status. I think that is the real value of knowledge exchange.

Hi Chris
I would say that the Cognitive Edge Practitioner Network fits your description of a Knowledge Asset. It gives me access to everything you describe.
All the best,
Cheryl

Dave Snowden's recipe books
