Good morning from Dhaka ka. Despite several other things I'll have to do, let me write my second email as intended ka.

It was very nice to have PSU President Boonsom with us at this Summit. In addition to the Summit, I had an opportunity to discuss and learn from him too ka. He permitted me to share what I thought about him (I didn't tell him what I'd share, though!)

Well! Being in a leadership position is truly demanding and it needs many types of skills from technical to management and interpersonal skills na ka.

Here are some I got from him ka.

Q: What is needed to prepare for the future?

A: Ability to live happily in multicultural environments.....sounds like he was promoting Fulbright loei la ka:))

Q: What's the biggest challenge being University President?

A: It's the way to 'manage people's feelings'.

This is the very first time I heard such a thing 'บริหารความรู้สึก' na ka. He said whatever policy the university puts into force could have impacts on the university community. He mentioned about the need for faculty with doctorate. It could seem that the university paid far too much attention for doctorates, leaving out those who have been teaching very hard all along. Caring is a must for all na ka.

Here, I think it goes beyond communication as it must be based on trust in what the President says is very important na ka. The President needs to show his genuine appreciation to the whole community. More importantly, before anything else, he/ she needs to 'sense' the reactions of the people.....not easy to do but I think President Boonsom has done well from what I heard and saw ka.

Q: What kind of training will be essential for university presidents?

A: Training for them to have imagination. Every president needs to have it to visualize what he/she wants the university to be.

He then gave an example of his thinking, based on what the King's father said about the role of university. He then dreams of PSU to be the place for scholars with close ties to community....too bad I didn't write the exact wording down. It was one great way to look at the history of the university to be inspired and continue attempts to pursue the dream. President Boonsom's pursuit of history is another significant quality I've found in a few top leaders. For him in particular, he thinks it's necessary to know more about Islam and the southernmost part too ka.

In the sessions, I didn't see him talk on his cellphone and every time I glanced through, I saw him writing his ideas down on the notepad (wouldn't dare to ask him to share it ka) I know that being a president means thinking and planning all the time. Moreover, he made links with what he heard with what we may be able to do or adjust from there.

It was a one day that I learned.....from a good model ka!
