LABSCHOOL PROJECT

I was selected to participate in the prestigious FulbrightAdministrator Exchange Program eariler this year. I learned a lot while in Thailand.; I saw first hand ways in which we are decidedly different. For example, Buddhism is central to education and the love and respect Thai people have for His Majesty the King is amazing. I also saw the beauty of our communality-how we are the same. I learned that we face many of the same educational challenges. How do we develop students into people this world needs? The hightlight of my exchange was the opportunity to speak with the Crown Princess. It was an honor to represent my school and country when I presented her a book of poetry. She asked several questions about the poetry and then she inquired about the Fulbright Exchange. I informed Her Royal Highness that Ben 2's designation as a Lab School made all of the difference. The teaching and learning strategies used by Ben 2 teachers and students are the same strategies innovative schools are using in the United States. These strategies, often called "best practices",are good for students and teachers alike. For instance,Ben 2 hosted a three-day camp for teachers and students for nearby schools. Ben 2 students and teachers did not just tell them about the "best practice",they involved them. This way they learn by doing. I believe that the Lab School Project is a viable educational initiative. Experiences gain through the Lab School Project by Thai students and teachers nurture their well-being. Specifically, the project gives them opportunities to; Develop through a quality education. Expand their worldview and learn about cultures; Foster interest in knowledge and learning, to think creatively, and to acquire skills for employment and a happy life; Explore challenges and problems relevant on a global context; and Encourage learning inside and outside the school environment using technology and language for effective communication.
In a matter of weeks I will transition to a new position within Guildford County Schools. I will take on a new challenge as Magnet Schools Director. In this role I will be responsible for securing US $12 million in government funding and evaluating 39 magnet schools, I was so impressed with the quality of the Lab School Project school evaluation process that I have the evaluation process a centerpiece of the goals for my first year in office. The evaluation process is effective because it permits students to show what they know. This is the ultimate measure of a school's goodness.
In summation, the Kingdom of Thailand is poised to maximize the gifts and talents of certified Lab School and the Kingdom-wide Lab School Project. To discontinue, minimize,or otherwise curtail the great work of the Project would be tragic for the Kingdom's future; its children, I enthusiastically encourage the Ministry of Education to sustain and expand its Lab School Project for the benefit of education in Thailand.
