We are writing to invite you to the BrainFood..............................................................

...... lecture on 30 April 2008 at UNSW and also to provide you with an update of what's happening at UNSW.

BrainFood

The first talk in the BrainFood lecture series of 2008 is entitled

“A Future Free of HIV- the Scientific and Social Implications of making it happen”

Hosted by the University of New South Wales and the UNSW Alumni Association, BrainFood is an important event on the University calendar.

The speakers for this forum will be Professor Daniel Tarantola M.D., of Health and Human Rights at UNSW and Professor David Cooper AO FAA, Director of the National Centre for HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research. The forum moderator will be the Hon. Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG.

Justice Kirby is one of Australia’s best known and most outspoken high court judges, a brilliant intellect, an expert on human rights and one of our “national living treasures”.

Professor Daniel Tarantola's career includes being instrumental in the foundation of the world-renowned Medicins Sans Frontieres and its first doctor employed in the field. He was a senior policy advisor to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a close collaborator of the late, great Jonathan Mann, and a senior associate at the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard. Daniel will take us through the social and human rights implications of HIV, both historically and, as we look at new challenges, the changing distributions and improving treatments into the future. He is an internationally respected authority and he will deliver a thoughtful, insightful presentation that will be sure to stimulate much debate.

Professor David Cooper AO FAA is arguably the world’s best-known HIV researcher. Recently awarded the title of Scientia Professor at UNSW and welcomed as a member of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2003, David has been the National Director of the National Centre for HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research (NCHECR) for over 20 years and at the forefront of HIV research. David will take us on a scientific journey that will encompass the first diagnoses and treatments of HIV in this country and in which he played a leadership role through to the present day and on into a future of improved treatment regimes and possible vaccines.

With 45 million people living with HIV worldwide and 16,000 new infections across the globe each day, this is a special opportunity to take part in this unique continuing education forum, as we take local, regional and international perspectives on one of the world’s greatest challenges.

Australia, and UNSW in particular, is playing a critical role with world-class research, improved treatments and prevention and a greater understanding of the changing social implications of HIV.

We look forward to welcoming you to the University for this ground-breaking forum. Light refreshments will be served between 6.00 and 6.30pm.

UNSW Alumni Association - NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Members of the UNSW Alumni Association are hereby advised that the Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held on Wednesday, 30 April 2008 at 5.30pm sharp in the Galleries, the John Niland Scientia Building at UNSW Kensington. The business of the meeting will be to receive the Report of the President and to consider and, if appropriate, adopt the Association’s Financial Statements for 2007.

All graduates of UNSW, as members of the Association, are welcome to attend and are also invited to remain for the BrainFood forum which will follow at 6.00pm in Leighton Hall, also in the John Niland Scientia Building (see above for details).
