นี่ก็ใกล้จะกลับบ้านเต็มทนแล้วก็มีเหตุการณ์ใหญ่เกิดขึ้นที่ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ท่านที่ตามข่าวสารก็คงได้ยินข่าวว่าที่เมืองไครส์เชริท์ ซึ่งเป็นเมืองใหญ่อันดับสองของประเทศนี้รองมาจากอ๊อคแลนด์ เกิดแผ่นดินไหวรุนแรงขนาด 7.2 ริกเตอร์ ซึ่งขนาดเดียวกับที่เคยเกิดที่ เฮติ แต่โชคดีที่ไม่มีคนตายแม้แต่คนเดียว บาดเจ็บแค่ 2-3 คน ถือว่าเป็นปาฎิหารย์ อีกอย่างคือเกิดตอนประมาณตี 4 กว่า เช้ามืดวันเสาร์ ซึ่งผู้คนก็ต่างนอนหลับอยู่บ้านของตนเองทำให้ไม่มีคนอยู่ในอาคารสาธารณะ
อย่างไรก็ตามบ้านเมืองตึกรามเก่าแก่ก็ได้รับความเสียหายกระจายเป็นวงกว้าง

At 4.55 am of September 4, Christchurch was rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which caused widespread damage and left thousands without power and water as night falls.
The second biggest city was also hit by a series of major aftershocks.
Prime Minister John Key, who saw first-hand the devastation across Christchurch, said it was a miracle more people weren't killed.
"It's a miracle there where so few casualties*."
Much of the ruined city remains cordoned off* by police following the devastating earthquake.
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker has requested the army to help provide safety and security in the city in the wake* of the country's most damaging earthquake since the 1931 Napier disaster. He also asked people to conserve* water and keep boiling water for drinking, not to flush the toilet unless necessary, and not to ''rubberneck*'' because it was important roads were clear for vital services.
The mayor urged people to check on* their neighbours. "The most important thing is that there has been no loss of life.''

อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรีที่ปัจจุบันทำงาน UN เป็นหัวหน้าหน่วย United Nations Development Programme กล่าวว่า ประเทศอื่นควรดูนิวซีแลนด์เป็นตัวอย่างในด้านความพร้อมในการรับมือแผ่นดินไหว
Countries around the world should emulate NZ/ aspire to be as prepared as New Zealand for massive natural disasters like the Christchurch earthquake, former Prime Minister Helen Clark says.

aspire to be = to try very hard to reach พยายามให้เป็นหรือได้สิ่งนั้น
นิวซีแลนด์เป็นประเทศที่เข้มงวดในการสร้างอาคาร อาคารใหญ่ๆ นั้นจะต้องผ่านการตรวจสอบความแข็งแรงเป็นประจำ ทั้งเน้นการก่อสร้างที่ทนทานต่อแผ่นดินไหว (quake-proof building) ตัวอย่างคือตึกรัฐสภาที่เมืองหลวงที่รู้จักกันในนาม The Beehive ก็เป็นตึกที่สร้างเพื่อรองรับแรงแผ่นดินไหว เนื่องจากเวลลิงตันก็เป็นเมืองที่ตั้งอยู่บนรอยเคลื่อนของเปลือกโลก (Faultline)
