KHON KAEN MARATHON
If you care for your health by jogging or running on a regular basis, you are one of the expectant Marathon participants in the 8th Khon Kaen International Marathon on January 23, 2011 at Khon Kaen campus and its surrounding roads.
This is the eighth time the Khon Kaen International Marathon has been held. Originally, this Marathon was stated to commemorate Establishment Day of Khon Kaen University on January 25 of every year.
It was then upgraded as an international footrace event or simply Marathon in later years. The city where the International Marathon takes place is suitably named “The Marathon City” which attracts 40 countries to send their runners to compete in the country’s biggest sport event.
Among these 40 countries, such countries as Kenya, Ethiopia and Thailand are major winners of awards. The champion Marathon runners are always Kenyans in both male and female categories, while a Thai female is always a runner-up or second place. Let’s find out about this information on Marathon Day.
Are you wondering where the word ‘Marathon’ comes from? This is the history of the word: ‘Marathon’ is a Greek word. It is the name of the plain in Greece, where the Greek soldiers fought with the Persian enemies who invaded Greece in 490 B.C.
Greece won the war, then sent one soldier to run nonstop to Athens, the Greek capital, to announce its victory over Persia (now Iran).
The distance between the Marathon plain to Athens is 42.5 km (or 26 miles). Later, the Olympic Games, held for the first time in Greece, included the Marathon in the program as it appears now. The Marathon is thus named to honour the Greek messenger who ran a distance of 42.5 km nonstop from Marathon to Athens.
For many Thai runners, a long distance of 42.5 km seems tiring. Therefore, the Organizing Committee of Khon Kaen International Marathon classifies this international footrace into Full-Marathon (42.5 km), half-Marathon (21.2 km) and mini-Marathon (10 km or 10 K). Dear Readers, you can select one of these distances and practice your running skill and strength now!
About the routes for this Marathon, the Athletics Association of Thailand has approved the routes under the Association of International Road race Standard (AIRS). So Marathon runners from 40 countries can be sure of their safety and comfort from the START line to the FINISH line. Moreover, clean drinking water is given free at different points to “charge the runners’ battery” until they reach their destination.

คำอธิบายศัพท์และสำนวนที่ควรรู้
1) on a regular basis เป็นวลี (phrase) มีความหมายเหมือนกับ regularly (อย่างสม่ำเสมอ) การใช้วลีแทนคำ (word) เป็นสไตล์การใช้ภาษาที่หรูหรา เหมือนเช่นตัวอย่างนี้ a depth of 10 m = 10 m deep (ลึก 10 เมตร) เช่นกัน
2) expectant (อ่าน อิก-ซเปค-ทึนทฺ) คำคุณศัพท์ (สังเกตจาก suffix –ant) จากกริยา expect (คาดหวัง) ผู้เข้าร่วมแข่งมาราธอนที่คาดหวังจะคว้ารางวัล ....ท่านก็เป็นคนหนึ่งในจำนวนผู้เข้าแข่งมหาศาล กริยา expect นิยมใช้มากกว่า expectant เช่น All runners expect to win awards from the Marathon.
3) originally (อ่าน เออะ-ริจ-จิ-เนอล-ลี) เป็นกริยาวิเศษณ์ (สังเกตจาก suffix –ly) มาจากรากศัพท์ origin (the beginning การกำเนิด, การเริ่มต้น) แรกทีเดียวการแข่งมาราธอนจัดขึ้นเพื่อระลึกถึงวันสถาปนา มข. ประโยคนี้โปรดแปลเอง Originally, the Thais lived in Yunnan in the south of China, then moved to the present location.
4) commemorate (อ่าน เคอม-เมม-เมอ-เรท) เป็นกริยา มาจากรากศัพท์ memo/memory (บันทึกความจำ / ความจำ) กริยาแปลว่า “ระลึกถึง” ในบทการแข่งมาราธอนจัดขึ้นเพื่อระลึกถึงวันสถาปนา มข. แล้วตัวอย่างนี้ระลึกถึงใครหรืออะไร Mahidol Day is held to commemorate Prince of Songkhla.
5) upgrade (d) (อ่าน อัพ-เกรด) คำนี้หากไม่แปล ท่านก็คงเดาความหมายได้ เพราะใช้กันเกร่อ โดยเฉพาะวงการศึกษา ในบท การแข่งมาราธอนปรับปรุงให้สูงส่งขึ้น (อัพเกรด) โดยมีนักวิ่งนานาชาติมาร่วมแข่งขันด้วย ขณะนี้มีถึง 40 ชาติ Go International!
6) wondering (อ่าน วัน-เดอ-ริ่ง) นิยมใช้ในรูปประโยค Are you wondering…..? และ I’m wondering …… ให้แปลว่า “คุณอยากทราบไหมว่า... และผมอยากทราบว่า ..... ในบทคุณอยากทราบไหมว่าคำ “มาราธอน” มาจากภาษาอะไร โปรดหาคำตอบในบทเรียนเอง
7) plain (อ่าน เพลน) เป็นคำนาม แปลว่า “ที่ราบลุ่ม” เช่น The central plain (ที่ราบลุ่มภาคกลางของไทย) ในบท เป็นที่ราบลุ่มมาราธอน ซึ่ง กลายเป็นสนามรบระหว่างกรีซกับเปอร์เซีย (สมัยโน้น) ยังใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ได้ด้วย เช่น a plain face (ใบหน้าพอไปวัดไปวาได้) a plain shirt คงไม่ใช่ยี่ห้อ Arrow หรือ Lacoste
8) 490 B.C. เป็นคำย่อของ Before Christ (ก่อนพระเยซูประสูติ) ค.ศ.ปัจจุบันคือ 2011 อยากทราบว่าเหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นมาแล้วกี่ปี ให้เอา 490-2511 นะครับ
9) Tiring (อ่าน ไท-ริ่ง) คำคุณศัพท์จากกริยา tire (เหนื่อย) ในบทระยะทาง 42.5 กม. เป็นระยะทางไกล และทำให้เหนื่อยสำหรับคนที่ไม่เคยวิ่งระยะนี้
10) destination (อ่าน เดส-ติ-เน-ชั่น) แปลว่า “จุดหมายหลายทาง” จุดหมายปลายทางของการวิ่งมาราธอน คือ The FINISH line (เส้นชัย) กรุณาวิ่งให้ถึงจุดนี้นะครับ
