The Second World Maghapuja Day B.E. 2554 (A.D.2011)
The celebration to ensure the continuity of Buddhism
16-19 February B.E. 2554
At the Veluwanna Mahavihara, Rajgir (Magadha State)
(Rajgir, Nalanda District, Patna, Bihar State)
On the full moon night of the third lunar month or the Magha, over two-thousand five-hundred years ago, the Lord Buddha delivered one of the most important teachings in Buddhism to 1,250 monks at Veluwanna, the first Buddhist temple in the world. The teaching/sermon was known as the Ovada Patimokkha or the Three Admonitions of the Buddha, which could be considered as the essence of Dhamma.
According to the Ovada Patimokkha, the three fundamental principles are: to refrain from doing evil, to cultivate in good or wholesome activities, and to purify the mind. In addition, the Lord Buddha taught the monks to live in secluded places, to consume moderate meals and materials, and to behave as role models for the Buddhist laypersons. These principles in the Ovada Patimokkha were subsequently developed into Sila or precepts, which have been practiced by monks and Buddhists until today.
The Maghapuja Day is one of the most important days for Buddhists. Unfortunately, the Maghapuja Day celebration has faded from India after the complete disappearance of Buddhism in the 17th Century. In February 2010, the celebration was restored at Veluwanna, the birthplace for Maghapuja, under the leadership and guidance of Venerable Guruji Arayawangso and the Maha Bodhi Society of India. The celebration was well attended by venerable monks and Buddhists from different sects and countries. It was thus considered the First World Maghapuja Day celebration.
During February 16 -19, 2011, the Second World Maghapuja celebration will again be held at Veluwanna. Monks and Buddhists from all over the world are welcome to attend the celebration. Some of the main activities will include procession of the Lord Buddha's relics, Dhamma discourse, vipassana meditation, and candle march.
The organizing committee of the Second World Maghapuja Day B.E. 2554 (2011) cordially extends an invitation to all Buddhist monks from all sects originating from every country and all Buddhist communities to participate in the celebration of the Second World Maghapuja Day B.E. 2554 during February 16-19, 2011 at the Veluwanna Mahavihara, Rajgir (Magadha State), Nalanda, Bihar State. The participation will demonstrate the unity and solidarity of all Buddhists, and will ensure the continuity of Buddhism.
