Experiencing in teaching for over 10 years, Wichian Chaiyabang
told us that the best education is not learning by rote approach
but the holistic one that not force students to memorize things or
tell them in advance on how things should be. In other words,
holistic education is the one that allow students to look towards
things in different perspectives, let them discuss the subject, and
learn from the process naturally. These will lead to the real
understanding and equip them with the practical learning process
they can apply in lives.
For over 8 years that Mr. Wichian has been a headmaster of
Lamplaimat Pattana School, he has strictly applied the holistic
educational system to the school and his effort had turned the
school’s disadvantages of being in remote area into the outstanding
one that has been the model for other schools.
“This school aim to build up a model school for the future
education.” Wichian told us. “It operates under the government
school’s condition but with different assessment approaches. We aim
high for the better result and have many approaches to develop our
teachers, students, and parents that allow them to learn together
along the process. We want to let other schools know that all these
are possible under limited operation cost.” He added.
“My school let the teachers hone through the trial-and-error
process to learn by themselves. I don’t want them to teach from
other people’s knowledge, our teachers teach from their own
knowledge. We also don’t force students to learn from the schedule.
They are allowed to choose the topic of each semester. It is better
to let them learn things they eager to learn. From the subject they
choose, for example – water, we can expand the topic into other
areas such as Economics, plant, blood cell, or mathematics. “He
explained.
